Likir Monastery Tourism

Likir Monastery, also known as Likir Gompa, is a Buddhist monastery located in the picturesque region of Alchi, Ladakh, in the northernmost state of India, Jammu & Kashmir. Nestled in the serene Indus valley, Likir Monastery is approximately 52 kilometers away from the city of Leh, positioned at an altitude of 3,700 meters above sea level. It was established in the 11th century and is associated with the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is notable for its large outdoor statue of Maitreya Buddha, which is around 23 meters tall. It has a rich collection of Buddhist artifacts, thangka paintings, and religious texts. Its tranquil ambiance, along with the scenic backdrop of rugged mountains and clear blue skies, makes it a spiritually uplifting retreat for visitors and practitioners of Buddhism. Considered one of the older and well-maintained monasteries, Likir holds annual festivals that display masked dances and cultural celebrations, attracting tourists and locals alike.
