Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is a highly revered Sikh temple located approximately 25 km from Leh on the Leh-Kargil road, at an altitude of 12,000 feet above sea level in the Himalayas. It was built in 1517 to commemorate the visit of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of the Sikh religion, to the Ladakh region. The Gurudwara is named after a large boulder found within its premises that is believed to hold the imprint of Guru Nanak Dev's back. It is said that a demon hurled a large rock at the Guru, which, upon touching him, softened and turned to wax, leaving the imprint. The boulder remains on display, and the Gurudwara is maintained by the Indian Army. The Gurudwara offers langar (community kitchen) service to all visitors irrespective of their religion or background, embodying the Sikh principles of inclusivity and service.
