Amaravathi Mahachaitya, also known as Amararama, one of the Pancharama Kshetras, is situated in Amaravathi town in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. This ancient stupa, related to the Vajrayana teachings of Lord Buddha, has a significant place in Buddhist history and heritage. Constructed around the 2nd century BCE, the site was once home to a massive stupa larger than the one at Sanchi. It became a renowned center for Buddhist art and culture, influencing the region's religious architecture and iconography. The Mahachaitya (Great Stupa) itself reveals intricate carvings and sculptures that reflect ancient Buddhist narratives, showcasing the life and teachings of Buddha. The site was excavated by Colonel Colin Mackenzie in 1797, revealing a wealth of relics and historical importance. Many sculptures and artifacts from Amaravathi are now housed in museums across India and the world, with prominent collections in the British Museum, London, and the Government Museum, Chennai.
