Amarnath Cave Temple is a sacred Hindu shrine located in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It lies at an altitude of 3,888 meters (12,756 feet) and is accessible via Pahalgam town, which is the base for the pilgrimage. The cave is surrounded by snowy mountains and is one of the most revered places for worshippers of Lord Shiva. The main attraction is the naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam, a symbol of Lord Shiva, which waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon. Pilgrims undertake the challenging annual Amarnath Yatra, typically between late June to August. This pilgrimage symbolizes the discovery of the cave by a shepherd named Buta Malik; a shrine was subsequently built, becoming a revered pilgrimage destination. The journey involves trekking through rugged terrain and requires good physical fitness. The region is also noted for its stark beauty and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Despite the arduous nature of the trek and the need for high security due to its sensitive location, thousands of devout pilgrims make the journey each year, showcasing their unshakable faith.
