The Amarnath Yatra, one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The yatra leads to the Amarnath Cave, situated at an altitude of 3,888 meters in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Base camps for the Amarnath Yatra are primarily located in Pahalgam and Baltal. Pahalgam base camp is where most pilgrims commence their journey, and it is well-facilitated with essential amenities. The camp offers medical facilities, food stalls, and tented accommodations. It is situated around 315 km from Jammu at an elevation of 2,740 meters. The Baltal base camp, located at a distance of 14 km from the holy cave, is another starting point. It is closer to the cave but the route from Baltal is steeper and more difficult. Baltal is accessible via road from Srinagar, being approximately 110 km away. The camps have facilities set up by the government and various NGOs to assist the pilgrims during the season.
