Anchuthengu Fort, also known as Anjengo Fort, is a historical fort situated in Varkala, a coastal town in Kerala, India. It stands as a symbol of colonial encounters, originally built in the 17th century by the British East India Company after obtaining permission from the Queen of Attingal to establish a trading post. Its primary purpose was to store spices and tea collected from the local traders. Anchuthengu translates to ‘Five Coconut Palms,’ which is indicative of the natural vegetation in the area. The fort is constructed out of laterite and flanked by bastions on four corners. It played a pivotal role in the Anglo-Mysore Wars, serving as a strategic signpost for the British navy. Despite its past, the fort today is serenely nestled amidst coconut groves, offering a glimpse into Kerala's history. The fort's architecture, reminiscent of British colonialism, the old cemetery, and the nearby lighthouse are significant attractions.

Good one!
Situated in the southern part of Varkala. No entry fee. Has a small lush garden. The whole place is well maintained. There is a placard outside to know a brief history of the fort.

The whole five coconut area is clean, calm and quite gorgeous. The garden and lighthouse pristine and one could easily imagine it back in the days of colonial rule
