Janardanaswamy Temple is a 2000-year-old temple situated in Varkala, a coastal town in the southern part of Kerala, India. Perched on the cliffs near Papanasam Beach, the temple stands as a significant religious site dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple’s architecture is a fine example of traditional Kerala-style construction with a circular 'sreekovil' (sanctum sanctorum), and the entrance gopuram towering against the skyline. It is renowned for its majestic setting overlooking the Arabian Sea and attracts pilgrims and tourists seeking both spiritual solace and natural beauty. The Janardanaswamy Temple is an important Ayappa temple, featuring an ancient bell removed from a shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel that sank near Varkala without causing any casualties. Legend has it that the ship's bell is rung to ward off evil spirits. The temple is also significant for the 'Vavu Bali', a sacred ritual performed here, where people pay homage to the departed souls of ancestors.

Loved the sacredness of this place!
Loved the energy of this temple. Different things to see in just one place. Easy to walk around. Spacious enough to walk on your own, well kept.
