Auroville is an international township located near Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, India. Designed by the French architect Roger Anger, Auroville was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, also known as 'The Mother', with the spiritual endorsement of Sri Aurobindo. Auroville aims to be a universal town where men and women from all countries can live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, politics, and nationalities. One of the most iconic structures in Auroville is the Matrimandir, known as the soul of the city, which is a large golden sphere that stands for universal motherhood. The Matrimandir is surrounded by twelve gardens representing different aspects of unity, and its inner chamber contains the largest optically perfect glass globe in the world. Auroville is home to residents from nearly 50 nations living and working together to build a community dedicated to peace, sustainable living, and 'divine consciousness'. The community includes various industries, organic farms, educational institutes, and eco-friendly practices, making it a place of ongoing learning and development in human unity and personal growth.
