The Old Lighthouse of Pondicherry stands as a historical beacon situated on Goubert Avenue in the coastal city of Pondicherry, India. Erected by the French colonists in 1836, this lighthouse served as a navigational aid to sea-farers for many years until it was replaced by a new lighthouse. Despite being decommissioned, the Old Lighthouse remains a significant landmark on the promenade. It represents the splendid French colonial architecture and maritime history. Although visitors cannot enter the lighthouse, its grandeur can be appreciated from the outside, and it provides a striking backdrop for photographers especially during sunrise and sunset. The lighthouse's location on the scenic Pondicherry seaside promenade adds to the charm of the spot, making it a favorite for leisurely walks and for tourists seeking the colonial ambiance of the city. It stands as a symbol of the bygone era and adds character to the surrounding region, resonating with the blend of French-Tamil culture that defines Pondicherry.
It is a nice and iconic landmark of Pondicherry easily noticeable from the promenade along the Bay of Bengal. Looks especially beautiful around sunset.
