Type of destination: Cultural Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Big Buddha of Phuket is a revered landmark located atop Nakkerd Hill near Chalong. Known locally as Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha, it sits at 45 meters tall and is visible from much of the southern part of the island. Constructed using white Burmese marble, it shines brilliantly under the sun. The statue's base serves as a museum and a place for visitors to learn about the monument's history and significance. Surrounding the Big Buddha is a peaceful and serene area, with smaller statues and a panoramic view of Phuket, overlooking the Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, Chalong Bay, and more. The site has become a spiritual center for locals and tourists alike offering a tranquil experience far from the bustling beaches. The gentle tinkling of bells and the fluttering of yellow Buddhist flags contribute to the calming atmosphere, with the option for visitors to purchase a tile to inscribe a message or a prayer before adding it to the collection. The Big Buddha project is funded by donations, which are used to maintain and develop the site.
