Bongeunsa Temple is a Buddhist temple located in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 794 during the reign of King Wonseong by the monk Yeon-hoe, then the highest-ranking monk of Silla, and originally named Gyeonseongsa. It is situated on the slopes of Sudo Mountain, opposite the COEX complex, a major urban development center. Over its history, Bongeunsa has undergone numerous renovations and had been the city's most influential temple before Joseon Dynasty's adoption of Confucianism led to its decline. However, its importance resurfaced with the restoration work in 1498 under the patronage of Queen Jeonghyeon. The temple boasts a large main Buddha statue known as Maitreya, a 23-meter high figure which was constructed in 2002. The temple offers 'Temple Stay' programs allowing visitors to experience the life of Buddhist practitioners and traditional culture. It is a serene sanctuary that offers a tranquil experience amidst the bustling city life, embodying a slew of cultural heritage and intricate architectural designs. Bongeunsa's annual events include Yeondeunghoe (lantern festival) contributing to its cultural significance in Seoul.
