Chaugan, located in the heart of Chamba town in Himachal Pradesh, India, is a grassy and wide promenade that forms the cultural and social hub of the town. Stretching over a length of about 800 meters and a width of around 80 meters, Chaugan is where locals and tourists alike come to relax, enjoy picnics, and soak in the serene atmosphere surrounded by the majestic Himalayan range. The word 'Chaugan' translates to 'four-sided' and traditionally referred to a place where sports like polo and cricket were played. Today, it is synonymous with leisure and recreation amid the quaint backdrop of this historical town. Chamba’s Chaugan is not only a popular gathering spot but also serves as the venue for the famous Minjar festival held in July or August each year, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region through music, dance, handicrafts, and a fair that attracts visitors from all over. The lush green field is bordered by impressive administrative buildings, local markets, and the noteworthy Akhand Chandi Palace, reflecting a mix of British colonial and local hill architecture.
