Chongjin, located in the North Hamgyong Province of North Korea, is the country's third-largest city and one of its principal port cities situated on the east coast. With a rugged topography encompassing hills and the Sea of Japan's coastline, Chongjin is known for its diverse industries including metallurgy, textiles, and fisheries. Established during the Choson Dynasty, the city's modern growth can largely be attributed to Japanese development during its occupation of Korea. Chongjin was heavily damaged during the Korean War but was subsequently rebuilt, expanding its industrial base. Today, it remains less accessible to foreign visitors than other parts of North Korea due to its military and industrial significance. The city has a complex of seven administrative districts known as 'gu' and houses attractions like the Chongjin Waterfront, the Revolutionary Museum, and the statues of the DPRK's founding leaders. It features a centralized square for public gatherings and boasts a local culinary scene which, while not as prominent as Pyongyang, offers a glimpse into North Korean cuisine.
