Rason, also known as Rajin-Sonbong, is a North Korean city in the North Hamgyong Province. Rason serves as a special economic zone where economic liberalization measures are tested and foreign investors are allowed to operate. It is strategically located in the northeastern part of North Korea, adjacent to Russia and China, with access to the Sea of Japan (East Sea). The area is unique as it has both a warm-water port and an ice-free harbor, which is vital for trade. Known for its beautiful scenery and potential as a hub for international trade and tourism, Rason offers a mix of North Korean culture and an atypical level of economic openness. Infrastructure includes a railway that connects to Russia and roads that lead to China, making it a critical transit point for goods. Despite its business potential, tourism is still very controlled and limited. Visitors require specific permits and are typically accompanied by government-appointed guides. Within Rason, one may encounter a variety of sights, including local markets, the Emperor Hotel & Casino (where some foreigners are allowed to visit), and beautiful coastal landscapes.
