Type of destination: City
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Nampo, also romanized as Namp'o, is a city and seaport in South Pyongan Province, North Korea. Nampo is situated on the Taedong River, which flows into the Yellow Sea. It is approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Nampo serves an important role in the country's maritime trade and shipbuilding industries. The city is home to the West Sea Barrage, a notable engineering feat that tames the Taedong River by means of a large dam. The barrage is pivotal for irrigation, flood control, and electricity generation. The local economy is diverse, with industries such as metallurgy, textiles, and agriculture thriving alongside seaport activities. Visitors also find the hot springs of Onchon worth a visit. Despite being a lesser-known destination due to North Korea's isolated position on the global stage, Nampo offers a unique glimpse into the country's industry and infrastructure. It is, however, important to note that access to Nampo and North Korea, in general, is strictly controlled by the government, with visits typically arranged via guided tours.
