Clan Jetties of George Town Tourism
Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Clan Jetties of George Town are a series of waterfront house settlements located in Penang, Malaysia. These settlements are over a century old, with their origins tracing back to the 19th century. The jetties were established by Chinese immigrants who moved to Penang and formed clans based on their surnames. Each jetty is named after a Chinese clan – the most famous being Chew Jetty – and is a tight-knit community where homes are built on stilts along wooden piers. These stilt houses were used by the respective clan families as both residences and places of work, particularly for fishing and dock labor. The jetties have survived modernization and are now a unique cultural heritage and tourist attraction, offering insight into George Town's historical waterfront lifestyle. Visitors can walk along the wooden piers, browse the souvenir shops, and enjoy local street food. The Clan Jetties provide a picturesque view of the Penang coastline and are a testament to the preservation of traditional community living in the midst of urban development.
