Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Fort Cornwallis stands as a testament to Malaysia's colonial past, located in George Town, Penang Island. It is one of the oldest structures in Penang with a rich historical significance. The star-shaped bastion is the largest standing fort in Malaysia, named after the then Governor-General of India, Charles Cornwallis. Built in the late 18th century by the British East India Company, it was initially made from nibong palm trunks. Later, the fort was reconstructed using bricks and stones. Though it never engaged in combat, its walls have witnessed significant events, including battles and negotiations that have shaped the region's history. Fort Cornwallis also houses a collection of historical artifacts, cannons, an old chapel, prison cells, and barracks. The famous Seri Rambai cannon is among its prominent attractions. The fort's lighthouse, known as the Penang's first lighthouse, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Today, it serves as a museum and a popular tourist destination, providing a glimpse into Penang’s colonial era and Malay culture.
