The History of Tourism in Sarnath

Sarnath, located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is a place of great historical and religious significance, particularly for Buddhists around the world. It was here, in the Deer Park, also known as Rishi Park, that Lord Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. This event, also known as the Dharma Chakra Pravartana (the turning of the wheel of Dharma), laid the foundation of Buddhism.

Tourism in Sarnath has been an integral part of the region's history for centuries as pilgrims journeyed to visit the sacred site. However, it was not until the late 19th century, with the archaeological excavations undertaken by the British, that Sarnath gained significant international attention. The rediscovery of the ancient ruins and the Ashoka Pillar heightened its importance as a tourist destination.

In modern times, the development of tourism facilities has made Sarnath more accessible to visitors from all over the world. The establishment of museums, improved transportation, and the regular celebration of Buddhist festivals have contributed to a steady growth in tourist numbers.
