The Dhammayangyi Temple is the largest of all the temples in Bagan, and while it has a storied history that dates back to the reign of King Narathu in the 12th century, its direct association with food is not prominently documented. However, the food culture around Bagan—and by extension, near the Dhammayangyi Temple—reflects a rich tapestry influenced by the various ethnic groups in Myanmar as well as neighboring countries like India and China. Food offered to monks and prepared during festivals would have been the closest link between the temple and the local cuisine. This historically included vegetarian offerings and local delicacies that utilize the abundant rice, vegetables, and legumes grown in the region.
