Diskit Village is the headquarter of the Nubra Valley in Leh District, Ladakh, India. It is situated at an altitude of 3142 meters above sea level, spread across the edge of a desert on the Shyok side of the valley, near the edge of the desert on the Shyok River. The village is home to the Diskit Gompa or Diskit Monastery, which is the largest and oldest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley, belonging to the Gelugpa sect. The Diskit Monastery, founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, displays a grand statue of Maitreya Buddha and boasts a series of shrines important to Buddhist culture. The village offers panoramic views of the surrounding cold desert and starkly arid mountains. Diskit is known for the Jampa Buddha statue, which is a 32-meter icon representing the Maitreya Buddha, situated on a hill above the monastery. Festivals like the Dosmoche and the annual Gustor Festival attract tourists for their vivid cultural displays. Diskit’s rugged terrain, desert landscapes, and proximity to the Nubra River make it a unique travel destination.
