Perched at an altitude of 3,144 meters above sea level, Diskit offers visitors a unique combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance. The village is known for its tranquil ambiance, picturesque landscapes, and the iconic Diskit Monastery, which has been a beacon of Buddhism in the region for centuries.
History of Tourism in Diskit
Tourism in Diskit, along with the broader Ladakh region, has historically been influenced by its strategic location and cultural heritage. Diskit has been a pit stop for travelers journeying across the historic Silk Route. However, it wasn't until recent decades that Diskit emerged as a tourism hotspot, following the opening of Ladakh to tourists in the mid-1970s.
The main draw for tourists visiting Diskit has always been the Diskit Monastery, also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa. The monastery was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century and belongs to the Gelugpa sect (Yellow Hat) of Tibetan Buddhism. It is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley and attracts visitors with its rich collection of Tibetan and Buddhist artifacts, along with the mesmerizing statue of Maitreya Buddha.
The initially slow and sustainable growth of tourism was primarily fueled by adventure seekers and culture enthusiasts drawn to the high altitude treks, stark landscapes, and vibrant cultural festivals. Moreover, the unique Bactrian double-humped camels in the Hunder desert nearby have also been a significant attraction, offering tourists an unusual desert experience amidst the snow-capped mountains.
