Diyatha Uyana, Boardwalk & Bavarian Garden - Sri Jayawardena Pura, Kotte
Went to Diyatha Uyana today noon after ages. It is usually relatively less crowded during the day time. This was the case today too. Usually the crowds start coming in towards the evening, ater office hours. Despite ample parking inside the place, it is not unusual to find a long queue of vehicle waiting to enter during the evening hours, especially during the holidays. Not sure if it is still popular to the same extent. They have fixed automated gates at the entrance and parking which used to be free is now charged. It has an open air food court, and other trade stalls. Most of the latter, nowadays seem to be occupied by ornamental or garden plant sellers. They include other related products too, like fertilizer and various items, including decorative items, needed for landscaping. I wonder if there's a large enough market in the vicinity for the vast number of stalls the place has. In addition there were couple fruits and vegetable stalls. In one of which they actually had green gram that has become something of a rare commodity these days. It was bit expensive, something like Rs. 1,500/= per kilogram, but seemed of good quality, even compared to what I have seen in the supermarket during recent times. I was told by the shop owners, upon inquiring, that they have a supplier who get them down from Udawalawe. I bought 500g along with some Manioc. They had some various other legumes and White Cowpea types, that I haven't seen or heard of. They also had dried fish, that seemed reasonably priced. A kilo of white Thalapath dried fish at Rs. 2,000/=. There was an Achcharu (Pickle) store at the far end, which I didn't visit. There is a small aquarium at that end. Biggest attraction here for me used to be the restaurant Boardwalk at the opposite end adjoining the Diyawanna Oya, managed by Waters Edge, the hotel next door. Now the open air surrounding garden has been named Bavarian Garden at the Edge with a German theme going on, promoting bockwurst and beer. This used to be my go to place to chill in the evening, with or without a beer. They had a good overall menu and a decent cocktail menu too. Service too was good except for the occasional guy with some attitude. My visits were so frequent I had one guy who had befriended me and provided a good service whenever I went there. Unfortunately never got his name. Main restaurant is opened to the surrounding garden and back in the days they had a decent band playing there. There's annupstairs that I have never set foot myself. Despite being next to hotel Waters Edge, Diyatha Uyana and even Baordwalk remained largely an attraction to the local, wasn't the most touristy place. But with a little bit of creativity and marketing it could be. There probably was an attempt at sometime back when they tried hosting "Good Market" or a similar scene on Doyatha Uyana premises, if I'm not mistaken, but those efforts seem to have died a natural death. There are walking and jogging paths and a children's play are too, at one corner closer to Water's Edge, with which the boundaries of Diyatha Uyana and Bavarian Garden simply merge. Good, fairly decent place to visit, especially the Boardwalk and Bavarian Garden at the Edge of Diyawanna Lake. Especially if you an outdoorsy type of person.
