Type of destination: Market
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Pettah Market, also known as Manning Market, is a traditional bazaar situated in the neighborhood of Pettah in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is one of the most vibrant and bustling markets in the country, known for its colorful array of goods and chaotic atmosphere. The market is a hive of activity, where vendors offer everything from fresh produce, textiles, electronics, jewelry, to a variety of street food. The narrow streets are lined with shops and stalls, each specializing in different commodities, making it a one-stop-market for shoppers. Visitors can find local spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs at negotiable prices. Pettah Market is not just a shopping destination; it’s a cultural experience that reflects the diversity of Sri Lanka's population, with influences from the Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, and Burgher communities. Its history dates back to the colonial era when Pettah functioned as the main trading district of Colombo. Despite modern developments, Pettah retains its old-world charm and continues to play a vital role in the city's economy.

Don’t visit
Don’t bother visiting. There is no market to see, just a pool of dirty water. This market should be removed from places to visit in Sri-Lanka

Not a happening place
No idea if the place has lost its charm post Covid. But certainly when we went, there were very few stores. It wasn't as happening as they made it sound like.
