Dehiwala Zoological Garden, also known as Colombo Zoo, is a zoological garden located in Dehiwala, a suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Established in 1936, it spans across a land area of approximately 11 hectares and is one of the oldest zoological gardens in Asia. It is home to a wide range of species including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the region. The Zoo aims not only to be a place of recreation but also of education and conservation. It has a variety of exhibits and attractions, such as the African Lion Zone, the Reptile House, and the Butterfly Garden, which offer a glimpse into the life of various exotic and native species. The zoological garden also hosts animal shows and educational tours, making it popular among families and individuals interested in wildlife and natural habitats. The zoo has faced criticism over the years regarding animal welfare, but efforts have been made to improve the living conditions and the health care for the resident animals.
