Must-Try Foods In Dome Of The Rock (Jerusalem) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem, Israel

While the Dome of the Rock itself is an Islamic shrine and not a source of culinary history, it is located in Jerusalem—a city with a rich gastronomic heritage influenced by the myriad cultures that have made the city their home throughout the centuries. Jerusalem's culinary scene is a tapestry of foods and flavors from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Armenian traditions, to name a few.

Surrounding the Dome of the Rock, within the broader context of Jerusalem's Old City, food has historically been a symbol of both sustenance and celebration, interwoven with the area's religious and cultural practices. The city has seen a fusion of ingredients brought by countless pilgrims and conquerors, from the Crusaders to the Ottomans, who introduced their own regional spices and cooking techniques to the local cuisine.

Jewish cooking traditions, for example, have brought kosher dishes that range from Middle Eastern staples to Ashkenazi and Sephardi specialties. Islamic dietary laws, or halal food, also have a major influence on the culinary offerings around the Dome of the Rock, reflected in the widespread availability of lamb and chicken dishes, as well as vegetarian specialties.
