Best Time To Visit Edinburgh Castle (Edinburgh) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Edinburgh Castle

One of the best times to visit Edinburgh Castle in the United Kingdom is during the late spring to early summer months, particularly from May through to June. During this period, the weather is often mild and pleasant, with longer daylight hours which allows for ample time to explore the castle and its grounds. The temperature typically averages between 11°C and 17°C, making it comfortable for outdoor activities. Additionally, visiting before the peak tourist season in July and August means you're likely to encounter fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed visit. It's worth noting that Edinburgh's weather can be quite unpredictable, so even in these months, it is wise to carry waterproof clothing.

Another optimal time, particularly for those interested in experiencing cultural events, is August, when the city hosts the famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe. While the castle will be busier during this period, it's a unique opportunity to experience the castle amidst the vibrancy of the world's largest arts festival. However, if you prefer a quieter time to visit, consider the early autumn months like September when the summer crowds have diminished, and the weather is still reasonably mild with crisp, enjoyable autumnal conditions. This is also a time when the castle’s historical significance is celebrated during various heritage days which often include reenactments and exhibitions. No matter when you decide to visit, be sure to check the official Edinburgh Castle website for any scheduled events or potential closures to avoid disappointment.
