Must-Try Foods In Edinburgh Castle (Edinburgh) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Edinburgh Castle, a historic fortress that dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh from its position atop Castle Rock, has been a focal point for war and peace and has seen countless feasts and famines. Throughout its history, the castle has hosted grand banquets and royal gatherings. From the times of royal residents, such as Mary Queen of Scots and James VI, the cuisine would have reflected the wealth and status of its inhabitants, featuring lavish spreads that included meats, game, and imported delicacies.

In medieval times, the castle would have stored large quantities of grain, dried meats, and ale in its granaries and cellars to withstand sieges. The Officers' Mess, still in place today, would have been a place where officers dined, with food reflecting British military diets of the times.
