How To Reach Edinburgh Castle

Welcome to Edinburgh, United Kingdom!

Getting to Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland's most iconic landmarks, perched on Castle Rock at the heart of the city. Reaching this historic fortress is straightforward, whether you are coming from within Edinburgh or travelling from further afield.

By Train

Edinburgh has excellent rail connections with cities across the United Kingdom. The main railway station is Edinburgh Waverley Station, which is well-connected to the rest of the UK. Once you arrive at Waverley Station, Edinburgh Castle is just a short, albeit uphill, walk away. Head out of the station onto Princes Street and follow the signs leading up to the Royal Mile and onwards to the castle.

By Air

If you are flying in, the nearest airport is Edinburgh Airport. From there, you can take the Airlink 100 bus, the tram, or a taxi to the city centre. The Airlink 100 takes about 30 minutes to Waverley Bridge, near the main train station, and a similar tram ride takes you to Princes Street, both within walking distance to Edinburgh Castle.

By Bus

Edinburgh's bus network is extensive, with several services operating to the city centre from across the region. The majority of city buses will have a stop near Princes Street or George Street, both of which are convenient for accessing the Royal Mile leading up to Edinburgh Castle.

By Car

If you are traveling by car, be aware that parking in the city centre is scarce and often expensive. There are a few public car parks nearby, such as the Castle Terrace NCP. However, it is advised to park on the outskirts of the city and take public transport into the centre.

Walking

If you're staying in the city centre, Edinburgh Castle is within comfortable walking distance. Simply make your way to the east end of Princes Street and then proceed uphill along the Royal Mile, where the castle awaits at the top.

Accessibility

For those requiring special assistance, note that the castle is located atop a steep hill. The Edinburgh Castle Mobility Vehicle Service operates from the main entrance esplanade to the top of the castle for individuals who have difficulty walking.
