Best Time to Visit Hawler Castle (Citadel of Erbil)

The Citadel of Erbil, also known as Hawler Castle, stands as a historical fortification in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. The ideal time to visit the Citadel is during the spring months of April and May. During this period, the weather in Erbil is mild and pleasant, making it comfortable for exploring the outdoor site without the intense heat that characterizes the summer season. The temperature usually ranges between 14°C and 28°C (57°F to 82°F), which is ideal for walking around the ancient structure and enjoying the panoramic views of the city without the inconvenience of the midday heat. Additionally, the spring season is popular for cultural events, which may add to the experience of your visit.

Another suitable time for a visit could be during the autumn months of September and October when the scorching summer temperature has cooled down to a more tolerable range of 15°C to 31°C (59°F to 88°F). This time of the year also witnesses fewer tourists, which allows for a more personal and uncrowded experience at the Citadel. However, visitors should note that the Kurdistan region can occasionally experience rain during the autumn, so it's advisable to check the weather forecast and bring appropriate gear. Regardless of the time you choose to go, Hawler Castle offers a rich tapestry of Kurdish history and impressive architecture that you can enjoy throughout the year.
