How To Reach Hunza

Traveling to Hunza, Pakistan

Hunza Valley, a picturesque destination in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, is renowned for its stunning landscapes, cultural heritage, and hospitality. Here's how you can reach Hunza:

By Air

Gilgit Airport (GIL) is the nearest airport to Hunza. It is well-connected with Pakistan's major cities like Islamabad. From the airport, Hunza is approximately a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. You can rent a car or take a local bus or taxi from Gilgit to Hunza.

By Road

Traveling to Hunza by road offers an adventurous journey with spectacular views. The two common routes to reach Hunza are:

  • Karakoram Highway (KKH): Also known as the N-35, this is the most popular and scenic route to Hunza. The KKH connects Islamabad to Gilgit and further to Hunza. The drive can take around 12-15 hours from Islamabad depending on road and weather conditions.
  • Babusar Pass: This route is only open from late May to October due to heavy snow in the remaining months. If you're traveling in these months, you can take the N-15 from Islamabad to Naran and then cross the Babusar Pass to join the KKH in Chilas, continuing your journey toward Hunza.

Public transport, like buses and coasters, operates regularly from cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore to reach Gilgit and subsequently Hunza. Private tour operators also offer services including jeeps and vans.

By Rail

There is no direct train service to Hunza or Gilgit. The closest you can get by train is to Rawalpindi or Islamabad and then proceed to travel by road.

Tips

  • When planning a trip, consider the season and road conditions. Winters can be quite harsh, and road blockages are common.
  • Carry proper identification, as you'll pass through several security checkpoints.
  • If you're not a local, it may be helpful to hire a local guide or travel with a tour group for a smoother experience and deeper insight into the region.
  • Always carry cash as ATM services could be unreliable as you move further into remote areas.
  • Stay updated on the weather and road conditions just before and during your journey.
