Iso Teien, also known as Sengan-en or Senganen Garden, is a Japanese garden located in Kagoshima, the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. Established in 1658 by the Shimazu Clan, this historical garden is part of a larger area that also encompasses the Shimazu family's former residence. Iso Teien reflects the traditional aesthetic principles of Japanese landscape design and includes picturesque ponds, streams, and bridges, meticulously arranged to harmonize with the natural backdrop of the Sakurajima volcano and Kinko Bay. The garden combines the cultivated beauty of nature with the grandiosity of its scenic surroundings, making it a stunning example of 'shakkei' or borrowed scenery. Visitors to Iso Teien can enjoy the changing seasons, with cherry blossoms in the spring and vibrant autumnal leaves later in the year, alongside other cultural attractions such as the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, which is located on the grounds and houses industrial heritage exhibits tied to the Shimazu family.
