Kagoshima's Iso Teien, known in English as Sengan-en, is a historic Japanese garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. While Iso Teien itself is more about the beauty of nature and history rather than food, Kagoshima's culinary history it carries is rich due to its diverse agricultural produce and seafood. The region is famous for its unique culinary style known as "Satsuma cuisine," which includes various traditional dishes created during the Satsuma Domain in the Edo period. The cuisine has been influenced by trade with China and the Ryukyu Kingdom, as well as by local volcanic activity that affects the agriculture and aquaculture.
