How To Reach Jakar Dzong

Jakar Dzong, also known as the "Castle of the White Bird," is an important Dzong in the Bumthang district of Bhutan. To reach Jakar Dzong, follow these instructions:

By Air

Bathpalathang Airport in Bumthang is the closest airport to Jakar Dzong. It has limited flights, mostly from Paro. Upon arriving at the airport, you can hire a taxi or arrange for a pick-up with your hotel.

By Road

Traveling by road to Jakar is the most common way to reach Jakar Dzong. The journey from the capital, Thimphu, takes approximately 10 hours. You can hire a car with a driver, which is the most recommended way to travel around Bhutan given that all tourists (except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and Maldives) must have a guided tour arranged. Buses are available too, but the services may not be as frequent.

From Thimphu:

• Take the East-West Highway towards Trongsa.
• Continue on the highway and follow signs for Jakar/Bumthang.
• Upon reaching Jakar, Jakar Dzong is located on a ridge above Jakar town and is well signposted.

From Paro:

• Those coming from Paro will also take the East-West Highway.
• The route is similar to coming from Thimphu, as you will pass through Thimphu on the way.

Important Notes:

• Ensure you have the necessary travel permits arranged before your trip, as this is required for foreigners traveling in Bhutan.
• Consider the weather conditions, especially during the monsoon season, as roads can be slippery and travel may take longer.
