How To Reach Jakar

Traveling to Jakar, Bhutan

Jakar, also known as the "Switzerland of Bhutan," is a picturesque town in the central-eastern region of Bhutan and is the administrative center of Bumthang district. Reaching Jakar requires some planning, as Bhutan controls tourism to preserve its unique culture and environment.

By Air

The quickest method to reach Jakar is by air. One needs to:

  • Book a flight to Paro International Airport (PBH), the only international airport in Bhutan, which has flights from cities like Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu, Kolkata, and Dhaka.
  • From Paro, take a domestic flight to Bathpalathang Airport in Jakar. This service is offered by Druk Air and is subject to weather conditions and seasonal schedules, making it less reliable during certain times of the year.

By Road

After arriving in Paro by international flight, you can travel to Jakar by road, which allows you to witness the magnificent landscapes of Bhutan. This journey, however, can be quite long and challenging due to the mountainous terrain. The road trip includes:

  • A drive to Thimphu, the capital city, which takes about an hour from Paro.
  • From Thimphu, a journey to Jakar that typically spans across two days, with a stopover in places like Punakha or Wangdue Phodrang for rest and sightseeing.
  • The total drive is approximately 10-12 hours, covering a distance of around 280 kilometers (175 miles).

By Trek

If you are an adventure enthusiast, you may consider trekking to Jakar. This is only recommended for travelers who are well-adjusted to high altitudes and are in excellent physical condition. Trekking routes can take several days and offer stunning views and an authentic Bhutanese experience.

Travel Tips:

  • All tourists (except citizens of India, Bangladesh, and Maldives) must obtain a visa before arriving in Bhutan.
  • Independent travel is not allowed in Bhutan. You must book your trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.
  • Daily tariffs are imposed on tourists, which include accommodation, transportation, a guide, and food.
  • Be prepared for varying weather conditions, especially if traveling by road or planning a trek.
  • Ensure you book your trip well in advance, especially during the peak tourist seasons of spring and autumn.
