Janakpur, also known as Janakpurdham, is a historical city situated in the Dhanusa District of the Madhesh province in Nepal. This city is recognized for its religious and cultural significance, especially within the Hindu faith, as it is believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita, the consort of Lord Rama, as depicted in the ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana. Janakpur is home to the famous Janaki Temple, a landmark and a major attraction for pilgrims from Nepal and India. Built in the 19th century, the temple exhibits Mughal-influenced architecture and is often referred to as the 'Nau Lakha Mandir' after the cost of construction, which was nine lakh rupees. Aside from its religious prominence, Janakpur is also known for its vibrant festivals, Mithila art, and culture. The city used to be the capital of the ancient Mithila kingdom. Today, it serves as an important tourist destination that offers a blend of historical, cultural, and spiritual experiences. Janakpur is also connected to other parts of Nepal and India through the Janakpur Railway and is developing as an educational and cultural hub in the region.
