Lukla Tourism

Type of destination: Town
Lukla, a small town in the Khumbu Pasanglhamu region of Nepal, is predominantly known as the gateway to Mount Everest. At an elevation of approximately 2,860 meters (9,383 feet), it is where many trekkers and mountaineers start their journey into the Himalayas. Lukla is famous for its airport, Tenzing-Hillary Airport, which is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short runway and the extreme approach through mountainous terrain. The airport was built under the guidance of Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first two individuals confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The town itself is relatively small, with guesthouses, lodges, gear shops, and a few local eateries catering to adventurers who flock here. Despite its remote location, Lukla has adapted to its role as a trekking hub with necessary amenities and even internet cafes. The local Sherpa culture influences the town's atmosphere, and visitors can experience this warm hospitality and rich heritage before embarking on their treks.
