Type of destination: Historic City
Kirtipur is a historic city located in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, approximately 5 kilometers southwest of the capital, Kathmandu. This city is perched on a hilltop and is known for its rich cultural heritage, ancient architecture, and vibrant traditions. Established in the 12th century, Kirtipur offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, with narrow alleyways, old brick houses, and temples that bear the testament to its storied past. The city provides stunning views of the valley and the Himalayan ranges. Notable landmarks in Kirtipur include the Bagh Bhairab Temple, dedicated to the god Bhairab, and the Chilancho Stupa. Kirtipur is also a center for higher education, home to Tribhuvan University, Nepal’s premier university. The city's residents, known as Kirtipurians, have played a significant role in the history of Nepal, especially during the unification period under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. The local cuisine, such as Newari dishes, reflects the diverse cultural influences, and the traditional attire and crafts reflect the local artistry and skill.
