Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site located in the Rupandehi district of Nepal. It is widely recognized as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha. The site holds immense archaeological and religious importance, drawing visitors from around the world. Central to Lumbini is the Maya Devi Temple, which enshrines the spot where Queen Maya Devi is said to have given birth to the Buddha. The temple complex includes ancient ruins, the sacred Bodhi tree, and the Puskarni pond where the Buddha had his first bath. Surrounding the temple are the monastic zones, where monasteries built by different Buddhist countries showcase varied architectural traditions. The Lumbini Development Trust oversees the management and protection of the site. Lumbini is not just a single monument or location, but a compound of significant religious landmarks within a large park area designed for pilgrims and visitors alike to meditate and reflect. This UNESCO World Heritage site also features the Peace Pagoda, Lumbini International Research Institute, and the eternal peace flame.
