Type of destination: National Park
Jigme Dorji National Park is a pristine expanse of natural beauty located in the Punakha district of Bhutan. Covering an area of 4,316 square kilometers, it stands as the second largest national park in the country. Established in 1974, it is named after the late Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the Third King of Bhutan. The park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems that range from alpine meadows to subtropical forests. It is home to several endangered species such as the snow leopard, Bengal tiger, takin, and the Himalayan blue sheep. Glaciers and glacier lakes also dot the park, with the famous Gangkhar Puensum, which is claimed to be the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, partially lying within its boundaries. The park also has cultural significance with many ancient fortresses, known as dzongs, and monasteries located within its periphery. This fusion of natural beauty and cultural history provides visitors with a spiritual and visual feast. Trekkers frequently visit the park for its challenging routes and majestic scenery, which also makes it a critical area for conservation and environmental research in Bhutan.
