Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang or the 'Palace of Great Happiness,' is a majestic fortress located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in the Punakha Valley of Bhutan. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan, it serves as an embodiment of Bhutanese architecture, with its intricate woodwork and beautiful frescoes. The Dzong is an important administrative center and houses sacred religious texts and relics. It's the second oldest and second-largest dzong in Bhutan and has historically served as the seat of the Kingdom’s government until the capital moved to Thimphu. The structure has been through several renovations due to damage from fires, earthquakes, and floods but retains its majestic presence. This Dzong is the venue for the annual Punakha Tshechu, a religious festival where Bhutanese from all over the country gather to witness religious mask dances, receive blessings, and socialize. Surrounded by lush greenery and the stunning natural beauty of the valley, Punakha Dzong remains a powerful symbol of Bhutanese culture and history.
