Jilani Park (Racecourse Park), Lahore, Pakistan: A Tourism Perspective

Lahore, often referred to as the cultural capital of Pakistan, is rich in history and has an impressive array of parks and gardens. Among these, Jilani Park, formerly known as Racecourse Park, is a significant green space that serves both recreational and touristic purposes in the heart of Lahore.

History and Development

The park's history dates back to the days of the British Raj when it was initially established as a racecourse. This was a place where the elite class of that era would congregate for horse racing and polo matches. After Pakistan gained independence in 1947, the park was renamed and repurposed to serve as a public space.

It was rechristened as Jilani Park in memory of Malik Meraj Khalid Jilani, a philanthropist and a former caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. The park underwent substantial development to provide a place where people of all ages could spend time and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Features and Attractions

Jilani Park spans over a vast area and is home to many attractions including a large pond, a jogging track, a children's play area, and expansive gardens. The park also hosts the annual Lahore Spring Festival, which marks the beginning of the spring season and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The Lahore Zoo, situated nearby, is another place of interest for tourists and adds value to Jilani Park as a tourist spot. Hailed as one of the oldest zoos in the subcontinent, the Lahore Zoo complements the experience for visitors of Jilani Park by offering a glimpse of a wide range of flora and fauna.

Latest Tourism Trends

In recent years, there has been a significant push to enhance green spaces in Lahore, with Jilani Park being a prime example. Efforts have been made to improve the infrastructure, making the park more accessible and attractive to tourists and locals alike. Introduction of outdoor gyms, installation of more benches, and improvement of walking paths are some of the recent developments.

Eco-tourism is also on the rise, and Jilani Park contributes to this trend with its expansive greenery and attempts at sustaining the local ecosystem. This has garnered appreciation from the environmentally conscious travelers who look for sustainable tourism options.

Additionally, the trend of food tourism intersects with recreational spaces like Jilani Park, where food festivals and temporary food stalls during special events like the spring festival offer a taste of the local cuisine to the visitors, thus enhancing the touristic experience.
