How To Reach Jokhang Temple

Jokhang Temple, located in the heart of Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, is one of the most revered and important pilgrimage sites in Tibetan Buddhism. Here are several ways to reach this sacred destination:

By Air:

Most visitors begin their journey to Lhasa by flying into Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA), which is well connected to several major cities in China and has direct flights from Kathmandu, Nepal. From Lhasa Airport:

  • Take a taxi or an airport shuttle directly to Jokhang Temple. The ride takes approximately 1 hour.
  • Pre-arranged private tours usually include airport transfers.

By Train:

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway offers an extraordinary experience as you travel to Lhasa through spectacular landscapes. Trains to Lhasa run from several key locations in China including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. Upon arrival at Lhasa Railway Station:

  • A taxi ride to the temple takes about 30 minutes.
  • Public buses are also available and are a cost-effective option.

By Bus or Road:

Several long-distance buses connect Lhasa with other towns and cities in Tibet. Travelers can also choose overland tours that typically travel from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

Within Lhasa:

Jokhang Temple is located at Barkhor Square in the center of the Old Town. It is within walking distance from most parts of the city center.

  • Pedicabs and taxis are readily available for shorter distances.
  • If staying in a hotel nearby, simply ask for directions to walk, as the temple is a prominent landmark.

Keep in mind that Lhasa is at a high altitude, and acclimatization is necessary to avoid altitude sickness. Allow yourself a couple of days to adjust before engaging in any strenuous activities or extensive walking.

Important Note: Foreign tourists are required to obtain a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to a Chinese visa to enter Tibet. You must arrange this through an approved travel agency at least 20 days prior to your visit.

Jokhang Temple is open from 09:00 AM to 06:00 PM local time. It is advisable to check for any changes in opening hours or special events before planning your visit.
