How To Reach Kaaba (Mecca (Makkah)) In 2026 - 2027

Reaching the Kaaba in Mecca (Makkah), Saudi Arabia

The Kaaba, located in the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, is the most sacred site in Islam. Every year, millions of Muslims travel to the Kaaba to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, which is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey.

By Air

To reach the Kaaba, international pilgrims typically fly into King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah, which is the nearest airport to Mecca. From Jeddah, pilgrims can take a taxi, bus, or arrange for a private car to reach Mecca, which is approximately 100 kilometers to the east. There is also the option of landing at Ta'if International Airport (TIF), which is about 120 kilometers to the northeast of Mecca, but it is smaller and handles fewer flights.

By Road

From Jeddah: Mecca is well-connected by road to Jeddah. The Highway 40, also known as the Haramain expressway, is a straight route that leads directly to Mecca. Travel time is about an hour or so, depending on traffic, especially during the Hajj season when it can get extremely congested.

From Riyadh and other cities: For those coming from Riyadh or other cities within Saudi Arabia, the country has an extensive network of highways that lead to Mecca. The journey from Riyadh to Mecca is approximately 900 kilometers and can take around 9 hours by car.

By Bus

There are bus services provided by the Saudi Arabian Public Transport Company (SAPTCO) that offer trips to Mecca from different cities within the country. These are convenient and economical options, especially for travelers already within the Kingdom.

By Rail

The Haramain High-Speed Railway connects Mecca with Medina, Jeddah, and King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC). The station in Mecca is located at Rusaifah, near the entrance to the Grand Mosque. This is one of the fastest ways to travel to Mecca from these cities.

Note Regarding Entry to Mecca

It's important to note that non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the sacred city of Mecca; this rule is strictly enforced. All pilgrims must meet certain visa requirements established by the Saudi government and carry the necessary documentation for entry, which usually includes a Hajj or Umrah visa.

Accommodation and Preparation

Once you arrive in Mecca, there are numerous accommodation options ranging from budget hotels to luxury suites, many within close proximity to the Masjid al-Haram, where the Kaaba is located. Due to the high demand, especially during the Hajj season, it's imperative to book your accommodation well in advance.

Regardless of how you choose to travel, reaching the Kaaba requires careful planning and consideration for the rules and regulations set by the Saudi Arabian authorities, particularly around the Hajj period. Visitors should diligently prepare all travel documents and accommodation details ahead of their journey to ensure a smooth pilgrimage experience.
