Kangla Fort, known as Kangla Palace or Kangla, is one of the most important historical and archeological sites of Manipur, India. Located in the heart of Imphal city, the state capital, it was the ancient capital of the Manipuri Kings until 1891 when the British took control. The site spans over 237.62 acres and exhibits the rich past of the Manipuri kingdom through its ruins and remaining structures. The fort houses several significant temples, ceremonial platforms, and other relics that display the Meitei civilization's architecture. The Kangla Fort is symbolic of Manipur's governance, culture, and religion. Its main entrances, the western gate, and the eastern gate traditionally called Khongjom Gate, remain points of interest for visitors. The preserved complex includes shrines like the Temple of Govindaji and the coronation hall, where kings were crowned. A notable sight is the Kangla Sha, a statue of a mythical creature, which is a symbol of the state. Following a considerable renovation, the fort was opened to the public in 2004 and emerged as a key tourist attraction, showcasing the heritage of the erstwhile kingdom.
