Keibul Lamjao National Park is a unique natural habitat situated in the Bishnupur district of Manipur, India. It spans an area of approximately 40 square kilometers and is renowned as the world's only 'floating' sanctuary. This distinctive feature arises from the presence of 'phumdis,' which are a series of floating decomposed plant materials forming sturdy mats. These phumdis support the rich biodiversity of the park, including the endangered Sangai deer or the Manipur brow-antlered deer, which is endemic to this region. The national park is part of the Loktak Lake—the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India—and contributes significantly to the ecological and hydrological stability of the region. The diverse flora and fauna encompass a range of mammalian species, avifauna, and aquatic life. The serene atmosphere coupled with picturesque landscapes makes it a paradise for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and wildlife researchers. The efforts for conservation and ecotourism are noteworthy, as the park plays a crucial role in the sustenance of local communities and environmental preservation.
