Best Time To Visit Kargil (Ladakh) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Kargil, Ladakh, India

Located in the serene lap of the Himalayas, Kargil in Ladakh, India is renowned for its striking landscapes and significant cultural heritage. The best time to visit Kargil is typically between the months of late May to early October. This period marks the summer season in the region, offering pleasant temperatures that range between 8°C to 20°C. During these months, the snow from the harsh winters melts away revealing clear roads and the true beauty of the mountainous terrain. The summer months are ideal for outdoor activities such as trekking, expedition and sightseeing, as the weather is relatively stable with less chance of rain or snow disrupting travel plans.

Visitors should, however, steer clear of travelling to Kargil in the winter months from November to February, as temperatures plummet below freezing point, sometimes as low as -20°C to -30°C, and heavy snowfall often blocks roads, making travel difficult and risky. The Zojila Pass, which is one of the main routes to Kargil, is usually closed due to snow accumulation. However, for those interested in the cultural aspect of the region, the Ladakh Festival in September is a vibrant time to visit, showcasing local traditions, music, and dance, albeit just before the onset of the colder months when the region starts preparing for the long, heavy winters.
