Karsha Monastery is the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar Valley, located in Ladakh, India. Perched on the slopes of the Himalayas, it overlooks the expanse of the Zanskar River. Founded by the translator Phagspa Shesrab, the origins of the monastery date back to the 10th century. Housing over 150 monks, the complex comprises chapels, temples, assembly halls, and residential quarters for the lamas, exhibiting a treasure of thangkas, murals, enshrined deities, and precious artifacts. The main attraction is the grand statue of Buddha. This ancient spiritual center maintains the legacy of Gelug-pa sect (Yellow Hat Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism. Visitors are often awed by the vibrant festivals, especially the Gustor Festival celebrated with masked dances (chams) and rituals. The monastery complex also has a nunnery called Dorje Dzong. Surrounded by stark cliffs and barren landscapes, Karsha Monastery offers a glimpse into the region's rich religious heritage, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty.
