Phugtal Monastery, also known as Phugtal Gompa, is a remote monastery located in the southeastern Zanskar region of Ladakh, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Perched precariously on the side of a cliff and overlooking the Tsarap River, the monastery is built into the mouth of a large cave. It is one of the most isolated monasteries in the region and is renowned for its spectacular setting and architecture that seems to defy gravity. Founded in the early 12th century by Gangsem Sherap Sampo, a disciple of Gelug founder Tsongkhapa, the monastery is home to around 70 monks. It is accessible only by foot via a long trek that involves traversing high mountain passes, making it one of the most challenging but rewarding spiritual retreats. The monastery consists of a series of white buildings stacked atop each other, with a main temple, prayer rooms, a library, and residential quarters for the monks.
