Stongdey Monastery is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Zanskar Valley in Ladakh, India. Founded in 1052 by Lama Marpa Lotsawa, it's the second-largest monastic establishment in Zanskar and affiliated with the Gelugpa sect. The whitewashed structure, replete with red ochre highlights, contains an impressive collection of sacred shrines, thangkas, murals, and seven temples. Notably, the Gon-Khang (temple of guardian deities) is adorned with fierce deities and intricate iconography significant in Tibetan Buddhism. Pilgrims and tourists are drawn to its spiritual significance and awe-inspiring panoramic views. The annual Gustor Festival, marked by masked Cham dances, attracts visitors in droves, seeking to witness the vibrant cultural heritage. Despite its remote location, the monastery remains a beacon of Tibetan Buddhism, culture, and art, accessible by a challenging yet scenic trek through the stark landscapes of Ladakh.
