Best Time To Visit Killing Caves Of Phnom Sampeau (Battambang) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau in Battambang, Cambodia

The Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau are a poignant historical site located just outside of Battambang, Cambodia. These caves were infamously used as execution sites by the Khmer Rouge during the late 1970s. Visiting the caves is a reflective experience, allowing you to honor the memories of the victims and understand Cambodian history better. The ideal time to visit the Killing Caves is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is generally sunny and dry, which makes exploring the caves and the Phnom Sampeau area more comfortable and safe, as the paths leading to the caves can be slippery during the wet season.

It is recommended to plan your visit either early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. The cooler temperatures during these times will make the climb up to the caves, situated atop a limestone hill, much more tolerable. Additionally, a late afternoon visit can be combined with a viewing of the bat exodus at Phnom Sampeau, where millions of bats leave the caves at dusk, offering a spectacular natural phenomenon. Avoid visiting during the rainy season from June to October, as heavy rains not only make the trek challenging but also obscure visibility and the overall experience of exploring the caves and the surrounding countryside.
